Electric service panels or breaker boxes are an essential component of the electrical system in a building or home. However, they can pose several dangers if not handled properly. Here are some common dangers associated with electric service panels:
- Electrical shock: Opening the panel cover or coming into contact with exposed live wires can result in severe electrical shock. This can lead to injury or even death.
- Arc flashes: An arc flash is a sudden release of electrical energy, causing an explosion or release of intense heat and light. It can occur when there is a fault or short circuit in the electrical system. Arc flashes can cause burns, vision damage, and even fatalities.
- Overloaded circuits: If the electrical panel is not properly sized or if there are too many electrical devices or appliances drawing power from the circuits, it can overload the circuits. This can lead to overheating, melting of wires, and potentially fire hazards.
- Faulty wiring or connections: Older or improperly installed electrical panels may have faulty wiring or connections. This can result in arcs, sparks, and fires.
- Exposed live wires: If the cover of the electrical panel is not in place or if there are loose or damaged wires within the panel, there is a risk of fire.
If you have one of these unsafe and outdated electrical panels, we highly recommend replacing them. At the very least, you should have an electrician inspect the panel to see if there are any signs of problems.
